Vintage Chainsaw History
The chainsaw has come a long way since the first Stihl chainsaw. In 1929 Andreas Stihl of Stuttgart Germany patented the original Stihl chainsaw which he called the tree felling machine. In the years following 1929 many makes and models of chainsaws were manufactured but the Stihl is the one that made chainsaw history and is the vintage chainsaw most sought after by collectors.
Stihl chainsaw here to stay
Stihl chainsaws of today are one of, if not the most popular choice for commercial as well as home use. As chainsaws improved equally did the chain that performed the cutting. I have a couple which I have used for many years and am very happy the performance and realibility.
Chainsaw chain evolution
In 1946 Joseph Buford Cox an experienced logger had an idea after watching a timber beetle larva chewing its way through a piece of wood with its C shaped jaws. In those days one big draw back of the chainsaw was a lot of time spent sharpening and if he could make a
chainsaw chain with this C shaped cutting tooth it could be a great improvement. He did and the initial Cox chipper chain sold in Nov 1947. This design would be the basis for most chainsaw chain produced today and is one of the most important developments in timber harvesting. This was the start of Oregon Cutting Systems a $300 million multinational company.
